¡Ding Dong… AVON llama! is an exhibition presented as a collaboration between AVON and the Museo del Perfume of Mexico City. It celebrates one of the most iconic brands in beauty and perfumery. Even in the face of challenges, this company shows that it continues its commercial operations—especially in Mexico—and the exhibition serves as a testimony to the legacy the brand has built over the years, taking its name from one of its most famous campaigns, which ran from 1954 to 1967.

Products sold by women, for women
The story of this iconic cosmetics company begins in the United States as an idea by its founder, the visionary David H. McConnell (b. 1858) in 1886. While working as a door-to-door book salesman, he noticed how the small perfume samples he gifted his clients were becoming increasingly popular. He thus saw an opportunity in selling beauty products to women, by women, who found in this practice a path to economic independence in the late 19th century. Replacing books with perfumes was a pioneering idea on the part of the company’s founder, at a time when only one-fifth of the female population in the United States worked outside the home. In this way, McConnell became a pioneer of this liberating idea long before American women—and women around the world—won the right to vote.

California Perfume Company
The California Perfume Company was founded in 1886, and in that same year hired its first Avon Lady, Persis Foster Eames Albee. McConnell rightly believed that the best promoter he could have for products made for women was a woman herself, as she could share her own testimony about their functionality. Albee, in turn, created sales and training protocols to expand her sales team within the company. It was in the early 20th century that the company became international and entered Canada, and in 1929 the name AVON was used for the first time.

In the 21st century, Avon has joined philanthropic causes and donated nearly one billion dollars to major women’s issues, such as the eradication of breast cancer and gender-based violence around the world, through programs like Speak Out Against Domestic Violence and the Breast Cancer Crusade.

¡Ding Dong…AVON llama!
It is a fact that Avon made cosmetics, perfumery, and beauty accessible to women around the world through its catalogs, which now also offer skincare, jewelry, and more—thus helping to drive the economy of women seeking to increase their income by selling these products from home.

Avon is a company that has evolved with the world and the needs of contemporary women. For this reason, don’t miss this exhibition that spans over 100 years of the brand’s perfume history, from its origins in the 19th century to its 21st-century formulas that integrate essences, design, and technology in every bottle.
This exhibition will be open from May 28 to August 31, 2025, at the Perfume Museum in Mexico City. There, you can explore the history of its fragrances through bottles, advertising posters, and other curiosities.
